Cauvery Calling is the first campaign of its kind, setting the standard for how to revitalize India's waterways – the lifelines of the country. It will start the Cauvery River revitalization and transform 84 million people's life. The objective of the Cauvery Calling campaign is to plant 242 crore trees across Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in the Cauvery Basin.
Why Cauvery Is Dying
Cauvery's depletion and farmers' distress have a prevalent source— the dying land. Cauvery is fed by forests, like almost all rivers in India. This region has historically been covered by forests and tree cover. The soil was constantly replenished with nutrients and organic matter by animal waste and plant litter.
Organic matter enabled the soil to absorb water, thereby feeding Cauvery. But the soil is no longer replenished as the human population expands and the tree cover decreases. It no longer absorbs water and instead suffers from erosion. Cauvery, which is drying up, is no longer feeding the soil.
The main problems with Cauvery are:
- Cauvery has depleted 40% in the last 70 years
- Almost half the Cauvery basin suffers critical groundwater depletion
- 87% of the basin’s original tree cover has been lost
- During the summer, Cauvery is unable to reach the ocean. A desolate, the sandy bed is all that millions of people see for many months of the year
Key actions proposed as part of this Cauvery Calling project are:
- Moving farmers to take up agroforestry along with their regular agricultural practices
- Improving farmer incomes by increasing economies of scale
- Increasing plantation cover on Cauvery bed to enrich soil organic content and water retention in Cauvery
- Working with Governments to help support the farmers in a scientific manner
